The Rev. Ernest Millmore Stires was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1866. He attended the University of Virginia and the Virginia Theological Seminary, which he graduated from in 1888. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1891 and began his ministry as rector of St. John’s Church, West Point, Virginia. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1892, and served briefly in Good Shepherd, Augusta (1892) and Grace Church in Chicago (1893-1901). He took a call from St. Thomas’s Church, New York City, where he served until 1925 with a brief hiatus for service in France in the First World War, preaching on the Western front. Stires attended General Convention as a deputy from 1910 to 1925 and was a member of National Council. He was consecrated Bishop of Long Island in 1925. Bishop Stires died on Feb. 12, 1951.
