CENTRAL AMERICA: Armando Guerra of Guatemala elected primate

Bishop Armando Guerra of Guatemala was elected presiding bishop of the Anglican Church of the Region of Central America during an April 15-17 provincial synod meeting in Panama.
Guerra, 60, will serve as primate for a period of four years.
"Thank you for this support. It is an extremely difficult task, beginning a new era in a new place," Guerra told synod participants, while offering thanks to God, his brother bishops and his family.
Guerra is married to Norma Elizabeth Romero. They have three children and three grandchildren.
Guerra will succeed Bishop Martín Barahona of El Salvador, who has served as primate for the past eight years. Guerra's installation as primate of IARCA will be held June 12 in Guatemala.
The province, known locally as Iglesia Anglicana de la Region Central de America, is made up of the dioceses of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. With the exception of Costa Rica, all dioceses had once been a part of the U.S.-based Episcopal Church.
During the synod meeting, Bishop Julio Murray of Panama was elected vice president of the House of Bishops. Bishop Héctor Monterroso of Costa Rica will continue as executive secretary of the province.
