Bishop Pinckney of Upper South Carolina Dies

COLUMBIA, S.C. (DPS) -- The Rt. Rev. John A. Pinckney, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina since 1963, died here of a coronary on December 7.

Born in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on March 8, 1905, Bishop Pinckney graduated from the School of Theology of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., in 1931.

His ministry was spent in South Carolina parishes in Charleston, Clemson and Greenville before becoming Archdeacon of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina in 1959. He was consecrated Fourth Bishop of Upper South Carolina on September 18, 1963.

Bishop Pinckney had planned to retire on December 31, 1972.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Church, Columbia, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9.

The Very Rev. George M. Alexander, dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South, will be consecrated Bishop of Upper South Carolina on January 5, 1973.
