Diocesan Press Service. January 31, 1975 [75040]

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Church Army in the U.S.A. held its annual meeting in New York City on January 28th, 1975. At that time a plan for reorganization and renaming was approved. The name of the successor organization is THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LAY TRAINING.

In addition it was voted that a new organization known as The Church Army Society be formed for the association of Church Army Officers for fellowship and mutual support in their ministries.

The purpose of THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LAY TRAINING, is to seek out, in association with other agencies and churches, and prepare lay Christians for special ministries that can effectively be performed in such areas as evangelism, adult education and mission, youth work, administration, and social service.

The program of the Institute will introduce the students to the Bible, Church History, Worship, Education and various forms of ministry, among other subjects, in a setting of openness, affirmation, dedication, love and risk.

The Institute is committed to the examination of biblical and other studies in a setting of mutual sharing and receiving, discovery and enablement. As the students study together they become more aware of themselves, others, their values and of God, and how His gospel calls them to dare to be free, dare to fail, and dare to be open to his creative power in the world.

The Institute's Board of Trustees is chaired by Mrs. Thomas J. Collings, Glen Head, New York; the First Vice-Chairman is Captain Robert Andrew, Cleveland, Ohio; Second Vice-Chairman is Sister Margaret Hawk, Pine Ridge, South Dakota; Treasurer, Mr. John B. Tillson, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Secretary, Mrs. Edward Cosden, Jr., New York City.
