UTO Grants for 1978 Top $1.6 Million

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Meeting in late summer, the United Thank Offering Committee gave approval for 95 grants totalling over $1. 6 million, most of which will be financed from the 1977 United Thank Offering.

Ms. Judith Gillespie, UTO coordinator at the Episcopal Church Center, said that the following grants were approved

  • Alaska, Training for Church Growth Facilitator -- $1,300 to provide additional training for diocesan church growth facilitator who will assist parishes with their outreach ministry and help establish new congregations.
  • Argentina, Diocesan Conference Center, Salta -- $6,000 capital grant to complete re-roofing of center.
  • Arizona, Navajoland Episcopal Church -- Good Shepherd Mission -- $8,500 for materials to repair buildings at Fort Defiance Mission.
  • Arizona, Kinsolving Hospitality House, Phoenix -- $11,000 matching grant toward start-up operating costs of center for outpatients and families of seriously ill in Phoenix hospitals.
  • Bahamas, Abaco Parish -- $7,500 for the purchase of heavy-duty vehicle to facilitate ministry to the eight separate congregations in parish.
  • Botswana, House for Theological Lay Trainer, Gaborone -- $12,000 to provide a home/work center out of which a diocesan trainer will undertake the training of ordinands, in-service education for clergy, and lay training programs.
  • Brazil, Dourados, Mato Grosso Mission -- $12,000 to provide a residence for a priest trainer who will set up Theological Education by Extension Center for training leaders of new missions.
  • Brazil, Santa Catarina Christian Education Program -- $5,500 budget support and equipment for theological education of lay leaders and candidates for Holy Orders.
  • Los Angeles, Seamen's Church Institute, San Pedro, Ca. -- $6,000 toward purchase of equipment and materials for a pre-retirement training program for seamen.
  • Chile, Theological Education Center, Vina Del Mar -- $60,000 to provide a building for the establishment of a Theological Education by Extension Center for the Southern Cone.
  • Cyprus, Bishop's Office and Transportation, Nicosia -- $15,000 to provide part of transportation, office furnishings and secretarial staff for bishop in new diocese.
  • District of Columbia, Spanish/Episcopal Socio-relations Mission -- $4,000 partial program support for experimental two year program to assist Hispanic newcomers adjust to living in metropolitan Washington.
  • Dominican Republic, Emergency Scholarship Program for Seminarians -- $15,000 one year Scholarship support for seminarians in training to transfer to San Andres Seminary in Mexico so that their preparation for indigenous ministries will not be interrupted.
  • Ecuador, Education and Communication Equipment -- $24,000 to provide a radio communications network to remote missions in the Oriente for Christian education, health and agricultural training.
  • Fiji, Diocesan Film Library -- $3,300 to establish a diocesan film library that will aid in an outreach ministry to non-Christians.
  • Southeast Florida, Katherine Price Foundation Inc., Belle Glade -- $15,000 matching grant toward the purchase of land and buildings to extend the work of a volunteer program for the needy in the Florida Glades.
  • Southeast Florida, Church Building for Cuban Congregation, Hialeah -- $35,000 partial support toward the purchase of an existing church building for a new Hispanic congregation.
  • Southwest Florida, Straight Inc., St. Petersburg -- $8,300 capital grant for building extension and equipment for comprehensive rehabilitation program for young drug users.
  • Ghana, Diocesan Transportation Fund -- $20,000 to establish transportation fund for purchase of vehicles for evangelism and medical work.
  • Atlanta, Carver Homes Apartment Church Program of the Ecumenical Community Ministry -- $7,500 program support for a demonstration project in which four seminarians from the Interdenominational Theological Center will live and work in a public housing project to supplement the work of existing social services agencies.
  • Guatemala, Church and Community Center, Gualan -- $35,000 to establish community center and church in midst of city that Episcopal Church is helping to rebuild after the 1976 earthquake.
  • Guyana, Transportation Needs -- $9,000 to replace automobile of Mothers Union Worker for diocese.
  • Haiti, Croix-des-Bouquets School Expansion -- $50,000 capital grant to expand present limited school facilities to accommodate the increasing enrollment.
  • Hawaii, Holy Trinity by the Sea, Multi Purpose Building -- $30,000 to aid building of church center on site of ancient native Hawaiian church.
  • Honduras, St. Peter's Church, Tegucigalpa -- $30,000 capital grant to assist building of church and parish house as beginning of inner-city church center.
  • Chicago, Order of St. Anne Building Restoration -- $40,000 matching grant to allow convent to restore building to extend their residential ministry to families of patients in the Chicago hospitals.
  • Lesotho, Diocesan Center, Malutis -- $23,000 to establish diocesan center for evangelism work in remote mountain area.
  • Lesotho, Theological Education Training Program -- $6,000 partial support of program to train catechists, evangelist and ordinands to promote indigenous ministry.
  • Liberia, Transportation, Maryland and Kru Coast -- $11,500 to assist diocese in purchase of two land rovers for use of clergy in inaccessible areas.
  • Louisiana, Citizens Advocacy Program, New Orleans -- $4,500 matching grant to assist in extending into black community a volunteer program of ministry to handicapped.
  • Maine, Penobscot Indian Health Program, Old Town -- $3,000 partial support of primary health program with emphasis on preventative health care for children on Penobscot Indian Reservation.
  • Malawi, Diocesan Endowment Fund -- $40,000 capital funds for building and endowment support of indigenous urban training program for people of Lilongwe and Blantyre.
  • Malaysia, New Church Center, Ayer Itam -- $40,000 to build new church center for Chinese speaking congregation at rural mission.
  • Massachusetts, Paige Academy Language Art Center, Roxbury -- $8,000 partial program support for extension of language/art educational program for pre-school and primary children in low-income neighborhood.
  • Massachusetts, Jamaica Plain Community Development Corporation -- $15,000 to help with staff and technical assistance for ecumenical community development program in racially mixed inner-city neighborhood.
  • Mexico, New Mission Church Fund -- $25,000 capital grant toward building of new mission churches in State of Morelos and Federal District.
  • Mexico, Multi-purpose Community Center, Reynosa -- $45,000 for building of church and community center in an impoverished locale where health services, leadership training and social activities will be provided in a Christian setting.
  • Northern Michigan, Women's Center Northern Michigan University -- $25,000 to provide budget support for new residential re-entry program for women recovering from drug abuse and alcoholism.
  • Missouri, Downtown St. Louis Inc./Christ Church Cathedral -- $15,000 to match community development funds for establishment of new inner-city day care program.
  • Missouri, Grace Hill Neighborhood Health Care Center, St. Louis -- $15,000 help with the start-up costs of a nutrition program part of existing preventative health care service.
  • Montana, Bigfork Mission -- $12,000 toward purchase of building for church and needed community service programs in rural setting.
  • Mozambique, Diocesan Building Development Fund -- $8,000 capital grant to aid in building series of small chapels to continue worship life since government has confiscated schools where worship services were held.
  • Mozambique, Lay Training Program -- $2,000 to provide simple Christian literature for lay training in a country where literacy is encouraged but books are very scarce.
  • Nevada, Anglican Sisters of Charity, Boulder City -- $15,000 capital grant toward development plan for ecumenical retreat and conference center.
  • Newark, Roseville Coalition -- $10,000 to allow citizen advocacy program to expand its ministry into the growing Hispanic community in Roseville.
  • Albany, North County Youth Home -- $8,500, half of start-up costs of program to provide additional small home situations for rehabilitative and preventative work with troubled children in Essex County.
  • New York, Urban Homesteading Assistance Board -- $20,000 to allow the program to expand service to offer technical assistance and counseling to tenants who want to become cooperative owners of buildings that have become city property.
  • New York, St. Andrew's Community Center, Yonkers -- $13,000 matching grant to assist ecumenical, inner-city community center to develop new programs that will qualify for long term funding.
  • Rochester, St. Simon's Community Center -- $10,000 partial budget support for pilot Kindergarten Enrichment and Education Program.
  • Nicaragua, Transportation/Communication Reserve Fund -- $40,000 to establish fund that will allow diocese to purchase, repair and maintain its own radio system and vehicles in the future.
  • Nigeria, Lay Training and Retreat Center -- $20,000 toward building of local training center for lay training, conferences and retreats.
  • East Carolina, Sampson County Association for the Handicapped -- $3,500, matching grant for first year budget of new activity-oriented education program for physically handicapped.
  • Ohio, Toledo Coalition of Neighborhoods -- $5,000 budget support for first year of ecumenical community organization program, which encourages cooperative development projects.
  • Oklahoma, Ministry of Listening, St. John's Church, Tulsa -- $10,000 for budget support of first year of ministry of listening by women to women, using trained volunteers and a professional staff.
  • Panama, Clergy Housing Loan Fund -- $30,000 to establish loan fund from which clergy can borrow to purchase their own homes to eliminate rectory support from church budgets.
  • Panama, University Episcopal Center -- Hot Line Program -- $15,000 to continue help with second year start-up costs of crisis hot-line program.
  • Paraguay, Property Transfer Fees -- $3,450 for taxes and legal fees to transfer church properties from South American Missionary Society to diocesan ownership.
  • Pennsylvania, Institutional Prison Ministry, Graterford -- $10,000 two year grant to support ministry of inmate at the State Correctional Institution who was ordained deacon in 1975 and is providing a ministry both in and outside prison.
  • Pennsylvania, Project Strive, Philadelphia -- $11,000 matching grant to assist in the establishment of church supported Juvenile Justice program in inner-city.
  • Bethlehem, St. Barnabas Church, Kutztown, Penna. -- $16,000 program support for new day-care project in locale where, until recently, mothers have not left the home to work.
  • Puerto Rico, St. Thomas Alcoholic Rehabilitation Program -- $40,000 to develop alcoholic rehabilitation program including community education on effects of drugs and alcohol on the individuals.
  • Rhode Island, Providence Women's Center Inc. -- $8,500 partial budget support for temporary shelter for women and children at times of crisis.
  • Rhodesia, Car for Hospital Chaplain -- $3,700 to provide small car for use of black hospital chaplain so that he can respond to emergencies when public transportation is not available.
  • South Carolina, Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corp. -- $10,000 to match local funding of interdenominational alcoholism pilot project among very poor rural inhabitants.
  • South Dakota, St. Stephen's Church Red Scaffold, Cheyenne River Reservation -- $15,000 capital funds to build small multi-purpose building for worship and community activities.
  • South Dakota, Niobrara Planning Council -- $5,000 to assist with expenses of local planning unit as they establish their own funding plans.
  • Sudan, Provincial Self-Support Plan, Juba -- $30,000 partial funding of land development project to produce income for newly organized province as they work toward self-support.
  • Taiwan, Holy Trinity Church, Keelung -- $25,000 capital grant toward building of new church center to replace collapsing building.
  • Tennessee, Diocesan Lay Ministry Program, Nashville -- $30,000 to match local funding of new program to aid parishes in identification and development of lay ministry potential.
  • Tennessee, St. John's Community Video Center, Knoxville -- $15,000 to provide equipment to train church leaders in use of low-cost video equipment for production of Christian education programs on local cable television.
  • Southwestern Virginia, Church of the People Community Services, Nora -- $20,000 program funds for community ministry of self-help education that creates cooperative models where people learn how to develop services to help themselves
  • Virgin Islands, Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Thomas -- $10,000 to meet unexpected additional costs of erecting new church building on mountain side site.
  • Virgin Islands, Hispanic Ministry in St. Croix -- $15,000 second year's grant to help a new Puerto Rican congregation to become firmly established.
  • Olympia, Widow Information and Consultation Service, Seattle -- $7,500 for training of volunteer widow support teams to function in local neighborhoods.
  • Olympia, Adult Day Care Center, Inc., Seattle -- $6,000 partial budget support to extend program of this facility in ministry to elderly that helps them remain at home in community.
  • Spokane, Educational Institute for Rural Families, Pasco -- $15,000 matching grant toward capital needs of ecumenically supported education program for children of migrant workers.
  • Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Dekoven Foundation, Racine -- $12,500 capital grant for renovation to expand facilities of conference center.
  • Wyoming, Youth Emergency Services, Inc. -- $9,000 budget support for a temporary residential program for young people who experience difficulty in adjusting as families relocate in new coal fields of Powder River Basin.
  • Zaire, Theological Education Fund -- $10,000 to establish theological education fund to train ordained and lay ministers for many new churches in Zaire.
  • Zaire, Bible School and Diocesan Center -- $60,000 capital grant for building which will house diocesan offices, and where Bible and theological education will take place.
  • Appalachia Peoples Service Organization -- $62,000 block grant to aid in the support of 42 community projects within the twelve dioceses that participate with 17 other denominations in cooperative work
  • Evangelism Program Materials -- $8,000 for translation of Protestant Evangelical Church Growth materials into Episcopal evangelism leadership tools.
  • Family Life Research Program -- $7,000 partial funding for data gathering conferences to identify Episcopal concerns about family life and implication on church education and government policy.
  • Overseas Development Fund -- $50,000 to continue support of development work of overseas dioceses in their planning for autonomy.
  • South Pacific Anglican Council Scholarship Fund -- $20,000 cooperative scholarship program to help meet advanced theological education needs of diocese in South Pacific.
  • World Council of Churches -- $15,000 Episcopal funding for ecumenical study "The Community of Men and Women in the Church" by the Commission on Faith and Order of the WCC.
  • Retirement Fund for Women in the Diaconate -- $3,500 supplemental retirement assistance for women in the diaconate (deaconesses) who were ordained before 1970.

United Thank Offering Scholarships

  • To provide scholarships for women to be trained as indigenous leaders in countries outside the United States -- $35,000.
  • Scholarships for the training of American men and women who will serve the Church overseas -- $20,000.
  • Renewal of scholarships for American women who are completing studies began under UTO Scholarships -- $30,000.
  • Scholarships for Americans to attend St. George's College in Jerusalem -- $5,000
  • Contingency Fund -- $10,000 to provide for small supplemental grants to UTO projects that experience unexpected cost increases due to inflation.
  • Interpretive Materials -- $50,000 (approximately 3% of the offering) for the production of UTO materials that can only be created nationally.
  • Incidental Expenses for Women Missionaries -- $3,600 to provide each January, a small payment of $200 for "discretionary spending" of each woman missionary.
  • Discretionary Fund -- $279. 53 modest fund for unanticipated items that come to attention of the UTO Coordinator.
