Avery Rockefeller, Jr. Dead At 55

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Avery Rockefeller, Jr., a well-known Episcopalian and senior vice president of Grolier, Inc., a publishing company in Danbury, Conn., was killed December 4 in an automobile accident near his home here. He was 55 years old.

He was a great-grandson of William Rockefeller, who in association with his brother, John D. Rockefeller, organized the Standard Oil Company.

Mr. Rockefeller was a partner in the stock brokerage firm of Dominick & Dominick between 1949 and 1973. He served as a governor of the New York Stock Exchange from 1964 to 1970 and was a former chairman of the National Association of Dealers.

Born in Colorado Springs, Colo., he graduated from Yale University with a B.A. degree in 1949. He held an honorary degree in canon law from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of Kentucky in Lexington.

Mr. Rockefeller served on the boards of trustees of two of the Episcopal Church's agencies, the Church Pension Fund and the Seabury Press.

He is survived by his wife Anne Sammis Patterson, two children, his parents and two grandchildren.
