Hulsey Consecrated In Northwest Texas

Lubbock, Tex. -- The Rt. Rev. Sam Byron Hulsey was consecrated and installed as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas in ceremonies at the civic center here Dec. 13.

Presiding Bishop John M. Allin was the chief consecrator for the service which took place against a backdrop of wheat, cotton, sorghum, corn and pampas grass plants that are native to this region. More than 2,500 people joined in the festivities including representatives of the congregations in which Hulsey has served in his 22-year ministry.

The consecrators included two of Hulsey's predecessors: Bishop George H. Quarterman, who served from 1946-1972, and Bishop Willis R. Henton, who served from 1972 until he was called this year as the first bishop of Western Louisiana. Other consecrators were: Bishops William E. Sanders of Tennessee and Charlie F. McNutt, coadjutor of Central Pennsylvania.

The sermon was preached by the Rev. J. Pittman McGehee, rector of Christ Church, Tyler, Tex.

Hulsey, 48 and rector of Holy Trinity Church, Midlands, was elected at a special convention in August. He is a native of Fort Worth and a graduate of Washington & L ee University and the Virginia Theological Seminary.

The diocese includes 50 clergy, 34 congregations and about 12, 000 members.
