The Episcopacy

PROVIDENCE, R. I. -- The Rev. Canon Frederick H. Belden, rector of St. Paul's Church, North Kingstown, R.I., was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Rhode Island on April 24. He has accepted election subject to the necessary canonical consents.

SALINA, Kans. -- The Rt. Rev. William Davidson was re-elected Bishop in the Diocese of Western Kansas on April 25. Since January 6, 1966 Bishop Davidson had served as Bishop of the Missionary District of Western Kansas and resigned in order that the Diocese might elect its own Bishop after General Convention in Houston changed the status of the District to a Diocese.

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The Rev. Canon John Thomas Walker of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Washington, was elected Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Washington on May 1. He has accepted election subject to the necessary canonical consents.

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Diocese of Chicago, at a special session on May 22, failed to elect a Suffragan Bishop after a three-way deadlock remained at the end of the seventh ballot. Leading contenders at that time were the Rev. Canon J. Ralph Deppen, diocesan archdeacon; the Very Rev. A. James Edden, rector of St. Thomas' Church, and Dr. Christian A. Hovde, director of Bishop Anderson House. The Rt. Rev. James W. Montgomery, Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese, said another election would not be called for until after the regular October session of the Diocesan Convention.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Rev. H. Coleman McGehee, Jr., rector of Immanuel-on-the- Hill Church in Alexandria, Va., was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Michigan on May 21. The Rev. Mr. McGehee was assistant attorney general of the State of Virginia from 1951 to 1954. He has accepted subject to the necessary canonical consents.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The Rev. Otis Charles, Executive Secretary of Associated Parishes, Washington, Conn., was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Utah on May 16. He has accepted subject to the necessary canonical consents.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Diocese of Kentucky will elect a Bishop Coadjutor on June 18.

SANTA FE, N. Mex. -- The Diocese of New Mexico and Southwest Texas will elect a Bishop Coadjutor on July 6.

RENO, Nev. -- The Diocese of Nevada will elect a Diocesan Bishop on September 24.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Diocese of Massachusetts will elect a Suffragan Bishop October 15-16.

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Rev. Robert P. Varley, rector of St. Peter's Church, Salisbury, Md., was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Nebraska on May 5. The Rt. Rev. John E. Hines, Presiding Bishop, was chief consecrator.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Vogel, professor of apologetics and dogmatic theology at Nashotah House, Nashotah, Wis., was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of West Missouri on May 25, at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Kansas City. The Rt. Rev. John E. Hines, Presiding Bishop, was chief consecrator.

AMARILLO, Tex. -- The Ven. Willis R. Henton, Archdeacon of the Diocese of Louisiana, was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Northwest Texas on June 11, in the Lubbock Municipal Auditorium on the campus of Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Tex. The Rt. Rev. John E. Hines, Presiding Bishop, was chief consecrator.

Necrology

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- The Rt. Rev. Walter Mitchell, Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona from 1925 to 1946, died at his home here May 27 at the age of 96. Bishop Mitchell was a priest for 70 years. He served in Tennessee, Puerto Rico, South Carolina and New Jersey before being elected Bishop of Arizona in 1925. Funeral services were held in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix with Bishop Joseph M. Harte of Arizona presiding.

QUITO, Ecuador -- The Rev. Onell A. Soto, vicar of St. Nicholas' Church here for the past six years, has been elected Executive Secretary of the Ninth Province. Father Soto, 38, is a native of Cuba and has a B.D. degree from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. He will reside in the city of San Salvador, San Salvador, Central America. The Ninth Province comprises all Episcopal Dioceses in Latin America except Haiti.
