Resolved, That the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church urge the United States government to enact stricter controls on the use of carbon-based fuels, and create incentives for our nation’s transitions from dependence upon fossil fuels to safe, clean, renewable energy and thereby curb emissions of heat-trapping gasses into the atmosphere; and be it further

Resolved, That this Convention encourage every member of The Episcopal Church to urge his/her members of Congress to enact such legislation.

Original Text of Resolution

Resolved, the House of Bishops concurring, That the 77th General Convention of The Episcopal Church urges the U.S. Government to legislate a policy, such as a tax on carbon-based fuels (coal, petroleum oil and natural gas) or a cap and trade regulations system, in order to compensate for the environmental and societal costs of fossil fuels. Legislation is needed to incentivize our nation’s transition from dependence upon fossil fuels to safe, clean, renewable energy and thereby curb emissions of heat-trapping gasses into the atmosphere.
