The Very Rev. John C. Leffler was born in North Ridge, NY, in 1900. Ordained to the priesthood in 1929, he served in parishes in Rochester, New York and Ross, California, teaching Homiletics at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific from 1937-1940. From 1940 to 1951 he was rector of St. Luke’s in San Francisco, where he stood in strong opposition to the internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. In addition to attending General Convention as a deputy from 1940 to 1969, Rev. Leffler served on Executive Council and the Standing Committee of the Diocese of California. He became Dean of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, Washington in 1951, where he served until his retirement in 1971. Dean Leffler died in Seattle in 1987.
